It is a European safety standard for toys, which specifies the safety requirements and test methods for toys to ensure that they are safe for children to use. For plush toys, EN 71 standard mainly includes physical, mechanical, chemical, combustion and other aspects of the test. The following are the main test contents of EN 71 for plush toys:
EN 71-1: Physical and Mechanical Performance Tests
This part of the test examines plush toys for potential mechanical or physical hazards under normal use and foreseeable misuse.
2. EN 71-2: Flammability test
Fabrics and filling materials of plush toys must be tested for flammability to ensure that the toy will not burn quickly when exposed to an ignition source. Tests include the rate of surface flame spread and the flammability of the plush fibers.
3. EN 71-3: Migration of Specific Elements
This section tests plush toys for the presence of chemical substances that may be harmful to children. By testing whether these harmful chemical elements are released when the toy comes into contact with a child's mouth or skin, it is ensured that the content does not exceed the standard limits to avoid posing a hazard to children's health. It mainly tests for the migration of the following harmful elements:
Lead (Lead) Cadmium (Cadmium) Mercury (Mercury) Chromium (Chromium) Arsenic (Arsenic) Antimony (Antimony) Barium (Barium) Selenium (Selenium)
4. EN 71-9: Requirements for chemical substances
This part of the standard specifically addresses the control of chemical substances in toys. The standard specifies the maximum permissible concentrations and limits the content of toxic and hazardous chemical substances in plush toys, such as phthalates (plasticizers), banned aromatic amines, volatile organic compounds, preservatives, flame retardants and other hazardous substances.
5. EN 71-4: Chemical experiment toys
This part applies to certain toys with chemical functions, such as scientific experiment toys. Plush toys themselves are generally not subject to such testing, but if the plush toys contain similar experimental accessories, they need to comply with this standard.
6. EN 71-5: Chemical toys (except sets)
Similar to EN 71-4, this part of the standard applies to toys with certain chemical components. Plush toys are also required to meet this requirement if they come with parts that contain chemical components.
7. EN 71-12: N-nitrosamines and N-nitroso substances
This part of the test pays special attention to N-nitrosamines and N-nitroso substances in toys, and strictly stipulates that plush toys need to ensure that the content of these substances does not exceed the limit.
8. Labeling and warnings
EN 71 requires toys to be clearly and accurately labeled with age restrictions, safety warnings and other information. Plush toys need to be labeled on the packaging or labeling with appropriate age groups, precautions for use, etc., to prevent injuries caused by misuse.
9. Electrical safety (if applicable)
If the plush toy contains electrical components, electrical safety testing is required to ensure battery safety; overheating protection; and short circuit testing.
10. Acoustic performance (if applicable)
If the plush toy has a built-in sound device, EN 71 requires that the sound of the toy be tested to ensure that the volume does not cause harm to children's hearing.
